Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth are a part of everyday life that we may take for granted – but someone had to invent them first. More than 50 years ago, each of these technologies was influenced by one person. The wireless communications industry includes the perfect example of Hedy Lamarr, who, while known to many as an actress in the 1940s, was also The Incredible Mind Behind Secure WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth as noted in Forbes. Today, we celebrate Lamarr and all women in the field during International Women in Engineering Day. Since 2013, the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) has raised awareness of the outstanding opportunities available to women and girls in engineering.
Lamarr’s story is an amazing one, and more women are making significant contributions to engineering today. Of the 19 women in engineering at Cambium Networks, one developed a significant part of the engineering work that drives our cnMedusa fixed wireless broadband system. The solution is the first commercially available massive multi-user, multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) platform. The 14×14 integrated antenna array exceeds 802.11ac Wave 2 and supports up to seven simultaneous carrier chains.
Planning is vitally important for delivering reliability in wireless networks. Our LINKPlanner software is a key tool that network architects use to design and build wireless networks. LINKPlanner development and management is led by a woman.
