Wi-Fi has become the “Invisible hand” that makes it easy to connect everyone. You cannot see it, touch it or taste it, but you sure know when Wi-Fi isn’t there. When Wi-Fi is consistently performing, everybody wins. On #WorldWiFiDay, we celebrate the technology that connects more people every day.
Fixed wireless technology makes it easy to rapidly extend fiber or wired networks to deploy Wi-Fi coverage exactly where it is needed – whether indoors or outdoors. When Wi-Fi is paired with fixed wireless broadband, network operators have a proven, reliable and affordable connectivity solution that can be rapidly deployed and increase wireless coverage.
Wi-Fi is changing the way people live and work around the world:
- Service Providers – End customers’ demand for Wi-Fi is strong and continues to grow. Service providers are expanding Wi-Fi to their offerings. In our 2020 survey, 25% of broadband service providers are now offering managed Wi-Fi services to their business and residential customers.
- Enterprises – Businesses of all kinds are increasing efficiency from connected enterprises. India’s strategic port of Visakhapatnam was recently upgraded with Wi-Fi hotspots supported by fixed wireless infrastructure. The network enables industrial IoT (IIoT) RFID systems for all port entry and exit gates and provides outdoor Wi-Fi on port berths that previously did not have internet access.
- Education – Whether students are in the classroom or at home, high-capacity connectivity is needed to support e-learning. As schools like those in Burke County School District in North Carolina migrate to the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology to support coverage and capacity needs, student engagement and an improved academic experience accelerate learning.
- Municipalities – A major city in the United States is extending fiber infrastructure with multi-gigabit fixed wireless technology to provide Wi-Fi access in a downtown corridor. Also, the city of McAllen, Texas recently cut the ribbon on their community broadband network that provides free Wi-Fi access.
In Europe, more than 1,600 municipalities are using Wi-Fi provided by Cambium Networks Wi-Fi equipment as part of the EU’s WiFi4EU initiative. The major multi-year grant program provides public Wi-Fi connectivity to municipalities and associations across Europe. This infographic shows the number of municipalities that have deployed Cambium Networks.
